FALL 2011 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

JACOB SMITH
Foundation Members,

At this time of transition in leadership, I thought it would be appropriate to share a little about myself and the school vision for the coming year. I am a 1996 graduate of Airport High School. My wife Crystal graduated from Airport in 1997. We have 3 children, Jake, Rebekah, and Banks who are 10, 7, and 4. Jake and Rebekah attend Springdale Elementary. West Columbia has always been home, so what an honor it was last year to be invited to join the Bearcat family as an Assistant Principal. Prior to the 2010-2011 school year, I spent 7 years at Spring Valley High School, 3 years teaching and 4 years in an administrative role.

As we look forward to this year our vision statement is "Reaching New Heights." I know Brookland Cayce is capable of just that. Three ways we plan to do this are as follows:

1. Implementing a mentoring program called Synergy for Success for our students at risk of dropping out.

2. Creating a school within a school for our top academic students.

3. Making a renewed commitment to keeping our school building and grounds beautiful at all times.

This past school year was another time of achievement for Brookland-Cayce High School. Academically, a higher percentage of students passed the HSAP (Exit Exam). We showed increases in our Algebra I and English I state end of course exams. Maureen Pittman, our valedictorian, was a National Merit Scholar Finalist and scored near perfect on the SAT. We had three students accepted into Governors School, two for the Arts and one for Math and Science.

In our extracurricular activities, all of our spring sports qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in several years. Many of our student athletes made all-region and senior Jonathan Rumph made the North/South All Star Game in football and basketball. Our band and chorus scored superior at their state competitions and our Army JROTC unit was designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction for the 17th consecutive year.

The support we receive from the Foundation is incredible and the above accomplishments are a testament to what our Foundation helps us achieve. This past spring the Foundation awarded 56 student scholarships totaling $32,450.00 and 19 teacher grants totaling $10,750.00. We also are thankful for the Annual Teacher Breakfast and the many other events. Our Foundation members work very hard at these events and behind the scenes to support our school and community. The impact made on our students and teachers is significant and a blessing to everyone involved at our school.

From this side of the river,

Jacob Smith III
Principal, Brookland-Cayce High School
